What are water accounts?
Water accounts show the transfer of water between natural water resources (e.g. groundwater, rivers and atmosphere), individual economic sectors and private households. They make it easy to see what quantity of water is needed by which economic sector. They can provide a basis for decisions on the allocation of water quantities to economic sectors, especially in arid and semi-arid areas where water is limited.
In Moldova, Apele Moldovei is putting together monthly water uses reported by users who have an abstraction permit in an annual report. The agency prepares the datasets for water statistics and provide the results to National Bureau of Statistics. The knowledge on Water accounts standard (SEEA-W) in competent institutions is limited.
The EU4Environment – Water and Data programme supports the further development of water accounts to use the knowledge for water resources management.
