What are water accounts?
Water accounts show the transfer of water between natural water resources (e.g. groundwater, rivers and atmosphere), individual economic sectors and private households. They make it easy to see what quantity of water is needed by which economic sector. They can provide a basis for decisions on the allocation of water quantities to economic sectors, especially in arid and semi-arid areas where water is limited.
In Georgia, experts in GeoStat are aware about Water Account thematic but this is not the case in water resources management institutions. There is currently no process of data collection specific for water accounts. However, data which are needed for water accounts does exist.
The EU4Environment – Water and Data programme supports the further development of water accounts to use the knowledge for water resources management.
