A pilot study identified sustainable alternative water sources for the water-scarce raïon of Balakan in Azerbaijan, located in the transboundary Ganikh/Alazan River basin, shared with Georgia. The alternative water sources suggested include rainwater harvesting, groundwater use, and treated wastewater reuse for irrigation. Results of this study were presented at COP29 to inspire other water-scarce regions.
The study was developed by UNECE with support from the EU4Environment – Water Resources and Environmental Data Programme.
