Date: 27 September 2023
Country: Georgia
Component: Environmental Data, Other

The national workshops build on the regional webinar held on 7 September, which gave the introduction to air quality problems in the countries, possible solutions and ways to communicate air quality issues.

Meeting objectives, expected outputs and outcomes

  • Discussion of air quality problems in each EaP country
  • Showcasing of good practice examples in the country and the region
  • Discussion of good practice examples that could be taken forward by municipalities
  • Discussion of how to communicate air quality problems and possible solution at municipal level Participants

The workshop will gather participants from Covenant of Mayors East municipalities in individual EU Eastern Partner Countries.

Diatom training II: Introduction to elementary diatom morphology and identification, microscopic analysis, and management of diatom inventories

Date: 19-20 September 2023
Country: Regional
Component: Water resources, Environmental Data

The requirements for proper diatom identification are high and taxa should be preferably identified to species level and lower. Therefore, the microscopic examination and taxonomic identification is somewhat demanding and the necessary level and experience can be only acquired after some time of practice. A strong background knowledge of diatom morphology and terminology together with good awareness of most important diatom identification sources is a basic prerequisite to advance.

In the EU, a method for microscopic analysis is established by the EN 13946:2014 standard and provides instructions for identification and enumeration of diatoms for purposes of ecological status assessment. Following these instructions results in diatom taxalists with taxa quantified in relative numbers ensuring comparability and applicability of the diatom samples for ecological studies. The current training will cover all these elementary aspects.

The main objective of the training is that participants understand the essential and correct routine of diatom analysis, identification and, especially, get familiar with diatom morphology, terminology, and identification literature. The training programme is mainly adapted for beginners’ level of knowledge of diatom identification, but it is also intended to provide useful reference guide for diatom identification for more advanced levels.

REG - webinar “Clean Air Day: How municipalities take action and talk about it"

Date: 07/09/2023
Country: Regional
Component: Other

Air pollution is the main environmental threat to human health. The World Health Organization (WHO) assumes that around 7 million premature deaths are globally related to air pollution. The pollutant with the most severe health impacts is fine particulate matter, PM2.5. The main sources of PM2.5 are domestic heating with biomass or coal, diesel vehicles, open burning of waste and agricultural waste, industry and power plants. A number of good practice examples are available that can be implemented to reduce emissions of PM2.5 from these sources. In most cases, these measures contribute to further environmental topics such as climate change and noise as well as improving energy security and mobility.

Meeting objectives, expected outputs and outcomes

Raising awareness about the impact of air pollution
Showcasing good practice examples to reduce PM emissions from major sources
Highlight options for municipalities to take action
