Strengthening Armenia-Georgia Collaboration in Groundwater Monitoring

Country: Regional
Component: Water resources

In a significant step towards transboundary cooperation, Armenian and Georgian groundwater experts joined forces to monitor shared groundwater resources. On October 3rd, Armenian experts conducted sampling at selected monitoring sites in the presence of their Georgian counterparts, while Georgian experts reciprocated the following day in the presence of Armenian experts.
Debriefings followed each sampling session, providing a platform for fruitful discussions on similarities and disparities.

Groundwater, often an overlooked resource, silently supports various aspects of daily life, from drinking to irrigation in some cases. Despite its ubiquity, many are unaware of its origin and the critical need for its protection. Once contaminated, the process of purification can take several years and is particularly challenging.

Transboundary cooperation in water monitoring is paramount due to the interconnectedness of many water bodies that span multiple countries. Collaboration between experts from both sides of the border ensures consensus on monitoring outcomes, facilitating the implementation of effective solutions, and sharing costs and responsibilities.

The EU4Environment - Water and Data programme supports Armenia, Georgia, and other Eastern Partner countries in enhancing their groundwater monitoring efforts.
